Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability
The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
