Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille on Penalties to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now secured the season-opening trophy on fourteen different occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight French Super Cup title.

The Champions League holders appeared to be coasting towards a comfortable win in the match featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the net in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille struck twice in the closing moments to seize a surprise advantage. Initially, Mason Greenwood converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial equaliser in the final moments to force the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, stopping decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and the young talent all scored successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a 4-1 penalty victory.

The record champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this competition for the twelfth time in the past thirteen seasons.
